I guess I should start looking at building a liteweight PE (just to run grubinst.exe) or build a lite linux distro that supports mount -t ntfs-3g?Įdited by ndog37, 23 October 2011 - 11:49 PM. Or (dare I say!) Hirens is a ready made boot CD which runs XP and you can use a utility or script one from there. If you use WinPE then you could use RMPrepUSB with the ALLDRIVES switch as a GUI to put grub4dos onto the hard disk MBR (or Bootice or grubinst). You could use linux, WinPE or FreeDos as the OS. Once the OS is running you can install grub4dos and copy over the grldr and menu.lst to the target drive. That being said I wouldn't guess that grub4dos has built in functionality to mount /a /dev/sda3 and then copy so I guess I am expecting too much lol! I realise grub4dos is not a operating system, I was just hoping by experimenting with powerful grub4dos CLI I would be able to install the MBR, and copy the needed files to hd0,3 or something like that. I was hoping it would be a simple way to install grub4dos to mbr within grub4dos. Is this a partition on the CD or on the hard drive? Theoretically it would be possible to create a smallish FAT12 or FAT16 partition - possibly hidden and write to it the grldr and menu.lst. It is possible to install grub4dos grldr.mbr from within itself (grldr or grub.exe running) by using the internal dd command.īut there is no way that I can think of that you can actually write the grldr to the target drive.ĭo you mean installing MBR? is it possible? I have tried dd but how does grub4dos see /dev/sda? dd if=/grldr.mbr of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 Additionally I want to install a different menu.lst than the one I am booting into the grub4dos CD so how do I achieve that?Ĭolor blue/green yellow/red white/magenta white/magenta This is a the menu.lst I am using however I don't think it is right. Is it a matter of compiling a bootable floppy ms dos image and then editing the boot entries in there and chain loading with grub4dos bootable cd and then some complicated mess or is it simple enough to do directly from grub4dos menu. Do I just add an entry kernel /grub.exe ? Can grub4dos execute exe files? I am not sure exactly how to install grub4dos from grub4dos. Should I create separate entries in my menu for these? Some machine may install to /dev/sda2 or any range of choices. I want to install grub4dos from a bootable CDġ) Creating a menu.lst for the bootable CD menuĢ) Adding the entry which will be 'Install grub4dos to mbr'Ĥ) burning to CD and then booting the machine from it and installing grub4dos to MBRĪn issue I have is I would like to install grub4dos related files somewhere eg /dev/sda3 but this may differ depending on the machine in question. I am trying to install grub4dos to a new machine hard drive MBR (no operating system installed but partitioned)
